On every journey south, I am always caught unawares by a random home nestled on farmland. The starkness of the white washed home with pain peeling against the richness of the land behind is a page out of history. The time when newly freed slaves because sharecroppers on the land they once worked for free. This painting speaks to the fear of the unknown; the harshness of their reality; and the joy of freedom.
