Artist Statement
Andrea Jane Wheeler is an intuitive, prophetic artist based in Baltimore, MD. She embraces a spiritual approach to her work, both in terms of subject matter and medium, with chalk pastel being her primary medium. From a young age, she felt a deep connection to her Great Aunt Laura Wheeler Waring (1887-1948), a renowned portrait painter and civil rights activist during the Harlem Renaissance. Andrea Jane studied Waring's use of color and the intricate details of her brushwork in the portraits and paintings that adorned her family's home in Wilmington, DE. She feels a bond with her ancestors who were athletes, artists, and creators. Andrea Jane views herself as a "legacy artist," with artistic expression embedded in her DNA.
